James 5:13 - 15

Is anyone among you suffering?  Let him pray.  Is anyone cheerful?  Let him sing praises.  Is anyone among you sick?  Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.

If you look at the practical aspect of the book of James, you see that verses 13 - 15 are talking about responses.

If you are suffering - your response is to pray.
If cheerful - your response is to sing praises.
If sick - your response is to call the church elders, and then accept prayer.

But how often do we take this advice?

Instead, we look to ourselves.  If we are suffering, we like to blame our sins, or our parents, or mope in misery.  James tells us to get outside of ourselves and pray.

When we are cheerful, we like to list accomplishments, or say we deserve it, or show off.  James says sing praises - praise to God.

Only when we get out of ourselves can we see the restoration of our bodies, and the forgiveness of our sins.  James is giving us a choice:  Look to God, and you will see healing.
