Philippians 1:21-22

"For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain.  If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which I prefer."

Once again, we see Paul speaking about a choice that is presented to him.  Live on earth or live in heaven.  He is confident that Heaven is the place of freedom and joy.  He is confident that there is a need for workers on this earth to help people achieve relationship with God.

It may appear that he is attempting to choose.  This is not the case.

Paul is acknowledging the sovereignty of God's choice.

In essence, he is telling the Philippians, "I will be happy wherever God places me.  Not because I like the location, but because I LIKE BEING IN GOD'S WILL."

Obedience is the goal and the reward.

Obedience is the goal and the rewards awaits. Obedience also takes faith, faith knowing that God is in control and that He will, in return reward His servants. Paul was not only great in his love and obedience to God but also in his faith. Faith that God would see him through all his trails and sufferings and that his reward in the end would be, eternity with Jesus.
