Philippians 3:2-3
"Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil workers, beware of the false circumcision; for we are the true circumcision, who worship in the spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh"
Here Paul warns the Philippians about people who will try to steal your faith with their religion. Evil workers, dogs - these are both euphemisms for false prophets - or bent priests. Paul is describing people that tell us religion is more important than relationship with God. It is not.
As further warning, Paul tells us to guard against "false circumcision" and then tells us that we are the "true circumcision"; what is the difference?
The greek word Paul used for "false circumcision" is "katatomeen", or mutilation, which is part of the play on the word, "Peritomee" meaning circumcision.
In other words, Paul is warning against something that looks like circumcision. Something that looks like true faith, but is only a worthless copy. Do you think mutilation is what God wants? Do you think falsehood is what God desires?
Paul suggests that every idea is tested out. Make sure this is from God. It may look like something that is great for us, but it is our responsibility to place our confidence in what is of Christ not what is of man.
Do you settle for good or for God?
