Philippians 3:8-9

"More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish in order that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith."

Paul here describes the quest for righteousness.

As we look to become more righteous, or more like God, we try various sources.  Paul says that he was looking to the law.  Paul discovered something that looked a little like righteousness, but he could never completely attain it.  Finally, Paul finds a faith in Christ and receives righteousness from God.

The point:  When Paul looked for righteousness, it was not to be found.  When Paul looked for God, righteousness was a by-product.

He describes his suffering as a means of finding Christ as well - where does your suffering lead you?
