Proverbs 1
"A wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel, to understand a proverb and a figure, the words of the wise and their riddles. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction." -Proverbs 1:5-7
At the beginning of this book of wisdom, Solomon gives us a little instruction as to how we should learn from these proverbs.
A wise man will hear. Wisdom does not require us to do all of the speaking, instead it requires us to listen and learn.
Solomon also sets up the theme of wisdom by comparing the wise to the foolish: The wise fear the Lord (this is the beginning of knowledge, but the fool despises learning.
How do we hear the word of the Lord? Verse 23 tells us that God will pour out His Spirit on us (to make His words known to us).
Finally, verse 33 tells us the results of listening to God.
Where are you today? Listening? Learning? Spirit poured out?
"Father, today, please speak to us and help us listen to Your instruction. Amen"

I love Proverbs. It's straightforward and hard to misinterpret. Our current financial crisis could have been avoided and could be begin to heal if only people would do more listening than speech making. Fear the Lord and seek his wisdom.
