Mark 9:1-8

One of the very interesting points to this story of Jesus' encounter with Elijah and Moses is how it ended.

After this time of ministry, God's voice was heard throughout the garden.  "This is My beloved Son.  Listen to Him!"  And suddenly it was over.  The transfigured were gone.  The voice ceased.  Just Jesus and the disciples.

So, what happened at that meeting that prompted God to make this statement?  If I have an encounter with Elijah and Moses will God proclaim His joy at my life?  Who was God speaking to?  Why did Jesus bring His disciples to a time of retreat?

There is significance in the people who were present here.  Moses, the representative of the Law.  Elijah, the representative of the prophets.  These suggest that retreat might be more effective if done in the juxtaposition of law and God's voice.  So why do we struggle so much with the two?

Here is the basic outline:  Jesus stopped and spent time with the law and the prophets.  God spoke and said, "beloved..."

When will we stop and listen?
