Jonah 2:7-9

"While I was fainting away, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came to You, into Your holy temple.  Those who regard vain idols forsake their faithfulness, but I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving.  That which I have vowed I will pay.  Salvation is from the Lord."

Jonah is in the belly of a fish.  By all of his accounts, he is lost to death.  There is no hope.  He will die.  He must die in order for others, like the sailors, to be saved.

Chapter two is Jonah's prayer - he is remembering about God and learning the lessons of coming back home.  Still, he understands that he must die.

So why does he end his prayer like this:  Salvation is from the Lord.

Jonah is telling God that he has made a mistake and wishes to rectify.  I'm sorry God, I didn't give You praise.  I will, in the future, sacrifice to You with thanksgiving.

Praise is not making something up about God - it is realizing something about God.  Jonah is giving up something to realize something about God.

What is your sacrifice to God in thanksgiving?   Will you give up looking at yourself and look again to God?
