Jonah 4:1-4

"But it greatly displeased Jonah and he became angry.  He prayed to the Lord and said, 'Please Lord, was not this what I said when I was still in my own country?  Therefore in order to forestall this I fled to Tarshish, for I knew that You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, the one who relents concerning calamity.  Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for death is better to me than life.'  The Lord said, 'Do you have a good reason to be angry?"

The crux of this chapter is found in these verses.  Jonah is angry because some receive salvation - he obviously does not believe they should be saved - and expresses his anger.

God asks a question:  Do you have a good reason to be angry?

We know, looking back, that Jonah does not have a good reason.  In fact, we realize that Jonah is angry because Jonah wants to be the one who decides if a city should be saved.

Look at all Jonah goes through to keep that power.  He runs from God so the message will not enter Nineveh.  He argues with God to try to change the Lord's mind.  He even tells God to take his life, that it is not worth living now that the wicked find a relationship with the Lord.

Do you have a reason to be angry?

The question is really:  I am the Creator - don't I have the right to work?
