Jonah 4:9-11

"Then God said to Jonah, 'Do you have good reason to be angry about the plant?'  And he said, 'I have good reason to be angry, even to death.'  Then the Lord said, 'You had compassion on the plant for which you did not work and which you did not cause to grow, which came up overnight and perished overnight.  Should I not have compassion on Nineveh, the great city in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know their right from their left hand, as well as many animals?"

This is how Jonah's book ends.  We don't have all of the details - whether or not he decided to accept God's challenge and change or to keep on being angry.

What we do see is a hint into God's reason for jealousy.

The question is asked of Jonah:  Do you have reason to be angry over something that you did not create?  Did not cultivate?  Did not instigate?

What God is saying here is that God and God alone has the right to be completely wrapped up in creation.  We would say that God is jealous of this position.  This thought redefines our challenge to love our neighbor - it means that if we are to truly love something God has created, we must simply love God.

Loving God is not always easy, but it is the path to true love.
