Acts 4:1-4

"As they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to them, being greatly disturbed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.  And they laid hands on them and put them in jail until the next day, for it was already evening.  But many of those who had heard the message believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand."

There are a couple of aspects of this passage that can be easily missed.  Let's look:

You see that the priests arrested the apostles in the evening.  In chapter 3 we see that Peter and John began this day at the hour of prayer, in the morning.  So Peter had spent the entire day reasoning  with these men - and it paid off.  Verse 4 says that about five thousand men received the message and believed.  If Peter would have stopped after the first couple of hours, he would not have been arrested; and he would not have seen so many moved to salvation.

Another interesting point is the reason for the arrest.  Two things the priests and guard and sadducees had against the Apostles:  They were proclaiming God's victory over death, and they were teaching.  Teaching is a job for the sadducees and priests, not for common people (this was the belief at the time).  So when Jesus used a fisherman to present His gospel, the crowd that was called to present the Gospel got jealous.  Perhaps because they were not fulfilling their calling.

When Jesus wants the people to hear a message, we will.
