1 John 3:17-18
"But whoever has the world's goods, and beholds his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in Him? Little children, let us not love with word of with tongue but in deed and in truth."
John is not telling us that we do not love our brother if we don't give to his need; He is asking if there is any proof of that love if he does not give.
Is there proof of love in your life? In the way that you live? In the way that you give? In the way that you love?
How does the love of God abide in you?
John then gives us his admonition: Love.
This is the sum of the commandments. Love in deed and in truth - do not simply tell people you love. Do not fool yourself by simply claiming to be a lover. Instead, love.
If you desire righteousness - love.
