2 Samuel 7:12-13 - "When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom.  He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever."

This is God's promise to, His covenant with, David.  David wanted to build a house for worship, but God said he could not.  Instead, God would bring a descendant in David's line to build a house for God's name and establish the kingdom of Heaven. 

This is what was foretold and has come true in Jesus.

David had to wait on God's timing before his joy could be complete.
