1 John 4:12 - "No one has beheld God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us."

This is the story of Emmanuel.  God draws near to us.  But He does not come near to us simply for the sake of being near, He draws near to us to abide in us.  This is what John calls perfecting love in us.

And thus we can have faith - because of God's love.  We can have hope - because God loves us. 

God's presence even allows us to have love.  Not that we can love, but that He loved us first.  This is why the greatest is love - because it is by God's love that we see God's love; that we see everything in God's character.
