Where were we?
Genesis 2:15 - "Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it."
The fact that we were created outside of the garden and then placed in the garden is a great nugget of theological gold. This says to things about the creation of man and the character of God:
1. We are a sent people. God, in His image, did not create a static people, but a people that should go, move toward more, grow. We are meant to be moving toward our purpose. We are not created to automatically fulfil our purpose, but to go there. In other words, we are called, then equipped.
2. We are given the best. Calvin calls the garden of Eden God's 'first-fruits' of creation. We are not sent to a wasteland, but a garden. Just as Abraham is sent to a 'promised land', and then again Moses and the Hebrews sent away from slavery and to Israel. It is just as the final act of removal of sin will result in a beautiful Heaven.
We have a Father who likes to give great gifts - actually, the best.
